
Stags Earn Share of ECAC Open Championship Title

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Fairfield men's tennis team captured a share of its third-straight ECAC Open Championship crown this afternoon, finishing in a tie for first place with the University of Delaware. In addition to a team championship, the Stags earned one singles and one doubles title as four Stags finish with medals.
Sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) captured his second-straight gold medal at the ECAC Open by capturing the Flight Three singles bracket. Berthod battled it out with Colgate's Phil Barnesek and came away with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory in the finals. In the semifinals, Berthod knocked off Delaware's Sam Barrer, 7-5, 6-3.
Also capturing gold was the doubles team of seniors Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) and Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.). The Fairfield pair earned the 6-2, 6-5 victory against Lafayette's Brett Kraft and Eric Wiley in the finals. In the semifinals, Gannon and Szikla pushed by Loyola's Doug Alban and Matt McDaniel, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) walked away with a silver medal after a tough 7-6, 6-3 loss to Delaware's Chris Hincker in the finals of Flight Four. Palumbo, who was a gold medalist last season, defeated Lehigh's Robbie Bolcar, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
In the Flight One semifinals, freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) fell to Delaware's Austin Longacre, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Fairfield and Delaware were represented in three of the five finals and ended the two-day championship with 15 overall points to be named Co-Champions of the event held at Lehigh. Colgate was third with 12 points followed by Lehigh (9), Lafayette (8), NYU (7) and Loyola (6).
In 2006, Fairfield edged Vassar 12-8 to take home its second consecutive championship. Three Stags took home gold medals while one captured a silver.
Fairfield is back in action Sept. 28-29 when it heads to the UConn Tournament.
