GLASTONBURY, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team downed Hartford, 6-1, this afternoon in its 2008 opener at the Glastonbury Racquet Club.

Fairfield took five out of six singles matches on the day with a pair of Stags notching their first victories in a Fairfield uniform.

Freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) earned his first collegiate win with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over William White at No. 2 singles. Junior transfer Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.) also picked up his first win at Fairfield with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Filip Miletic at No. 5 singles.

Senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Tim Glickman at No. 3 singles while classmate Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) forged the 6-1, 6-1 victory against Aaron Kooden at No. 4 singles. Rookie Thomas Wilbur (Amherst, N.H.) wrapped things up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against the Hawks' Eddy Hoey.

The lone Hartford win came at No. 1 singles as Artur Muller edged out freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in a three-hour grudge match. Muller picked up the first set, 6-2, but Ferrante came back to take the second set, 7-6, after a 13-11 decision in the tie-breaker. Muller and Ferrante continued to battle it out in the third set, but it was Muller that came away with the 7-6 win after the 7-4 tie-breaker tipped in his favor.

Fairfield also took the doubles point. The duo of Gannon and Szikla defeated Glickman and Kooden, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Bob Kelly (Queensbury, N.Y.) and freshman Mark Kremheller (Greenwich, Conn.) teamed up to defeat Miletic and Hoey, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. For Kremheller, it was his first collegiate victory.

Fairfield (1-0) returns to action on February 1 against Fairleigh Dickinson. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at Stamford Indoor Tennis Club.
