Men's Tennis Falls to Fairleigh Dickinson 6-1

STAMFORD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team fell to a strong Fairleigh Dickinson squad, 6-1, on Saturday evening at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club.

The Stags' (1-1) lone point of the day was notched by freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) at No. 2 singles as he edged out Matt Gordon, 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-5). The win was Ferrante's first collegiate dual victory.

At No. 1 singles, sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) was defeated by Philip Stephens, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) took the first set from FDU's Josh Girling but could not pull out the win as Gordon posted the 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.  

Senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Priit Gross at No. 4 singles while Kyle Eddins registered a 6-4, 7-5 victory against junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) at No. 5 singles. At the sixth spot, Alexander Nace recorded the 7-5, 6-0 win against junior Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.).

The Knights (3-1) took the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. At the top spot, Stephens and Gordon won, 8-4, over Berthod and Ferrante. At No. 2 doubles, Girling and Nace held on to defeat Laffey and Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) 9-8(7-3). At No. 3 doubles, Eddins and Gross nipped Szikla and Palumbo, 9-7.

Fairfield is back in action on February 8 as it hosts Sacred Heart at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club. First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m.
