
Men's Tennis Stops Sacred Heart 5-2

STAMFORD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team defeated cross-town rival Sacred Heart University, 5-2, in a late-night match on Friday at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club. Senior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) and junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) won both of their respective matches on the night.
Gannon, playing at fifth singles, defeated the Pioneers' Cole Conrad, 6-4, 7-5, in a tight match. Gannon then teamed up with Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles to defeat Conrad and Jinal Shah, 8-1.
At No. 6 singles, Palumbo made quick work of Bryan Rodgers in the 6-2, 6-1 win. In doubles play, Palumbo along with senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) defeated Rodgers and Chris Ujkic, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) defeated Nick Mazzerese, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) picked up a win at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ujkic.
At No. 1 singles, Berthod battled it out with Kirill Kasyanov in a back-and-forth match. Kasyanov, however, would come out the winner with the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision. Szikla also dropped a hard-fought match at No. 4 singles as the Pioneers' Shah earned the 6-2, 6-4 win.
Rounding out doubles action were Laffey and Ferrante who fell to Mazzerese and Kasyanov, 9-8 (4).
Fairfield (2-1) is back in action on February 22 as it hosts Temple at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club. First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m.
