
Men's Tennis Stopped by Florida Gulf Coast 6-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team fell to Florida Gulf Coast University, 6-1, this afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) picked up the Stags' lone win as Fairfield falls to 3-2 on the season while the Eagles improve to 3-4 overall.
Palumbo played well for the Stags at No. 5 singles as he picked up his third straight win. After taking the first set, 6-3, from over FGCU's Frank Acierno, Palumbo fell, 2-6, in the second set. In the tiebreaker, the two battled it out, but Palumbo came away with the 11-9 victory.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) fell to Andrew Kam, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was edged by Ervin Garibovic, 7-6(6), 6-2. At No. 3 singles, freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) fell to Danny Lee, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) could not overtake Edson Lima at the fourth spot falling, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.) fell to Gonzalo De Villa, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, the duo of Ferrante and Laffey fell to Brenton Bacon and Lima, 8-1, at the top spot while Palumbo and Bane fell by the same margin to Garibovic and Lee at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Berthod and Gannon were edged by Acierno and Lima, 8-6.
Fairfield wraps up action in Florida on March 5 against Boston College at 10 a.m.
