Men's Tennis Falls to Boston College 7-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team wrapped up play in Florida with a tough 7-0 loss to a very strong Boston College squad this morning. With the loss, the Stags even their record to 3-3 while the Eagles improve to 2-6.

At No. 1 singles, sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) played well but could not get by Alex Rastorgouev, falling 7-5, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Thomas Nolan. At the third spot, freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) fell to Erik Kreutzer, 6-4, 6-0.

Senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) remains stuck on career win number 99 after falling to Jason Sechrist, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. At fifth singles, senior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) was stopped by Brendon Wong, 6-3, 6-0. The Eagles' Michael Vann rounded out the singles victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win against junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.).

In doubles play, the pair of Laffey and Ferrante had the closest match of the day, taking the Eagles' duo of Brian Garber and Sam Wagner to a tiebreaker. Boston College, however, was able to pull out the 8-7(8-6) win.

Palumbo and Szikla fell to Sechrist and Kruetzer, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles, while Berthod and Gannon were edged by Adam Davison and Nolan, 8-5.

Fairfield returns to the courts on March 14 when the Stags travel to Fordham.
