BRONX, N.Y.  - The Fairfield University men's tennis team forged a 6-1 win against Fordham University this afternoon in non-conference action. It was a historic day for senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) as he recorded his 100th career victory.

Szikla achieved the milestone at No. 2 doubles as he and partner Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) posted an 8-4 win against Austin Shoup and Pat Tool. During his time with the Stags, Szikla has recorded 52 singles victories and 48 doubles wins. Fairfield had two players go over the 100 career win mark last season as Zachary Morrison and Jonathan Fernando became the all-time wins leaders with 112 and 111 combined victories, respectively.

Szikla and Gannon's win was a part of Fairfield's sweep of the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the freshman tandem of Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) defeated Dallas Harting and Brandon Abbatiello, 8-5. At the third spot, sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) and junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) downed Ken Fukumoto and Nick Kelly, 8-4.

The Stags (4-3) took all but one singles match from the Rams (1-7). At the top spot, Berthod defeated Shoup, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Ferrante outlasted Harting for the 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory. Laffey made quick work of Tool at No. 3 singles as he notched the 6-0, 6-0 win.

At No. 5 singles, Gannon battled it out with Sotiris Georgiou for the 7-6(3), 7-6(3) victory. Palumbo wrapped things up at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Peter Slucky.

The Rams lone win came at No. 4 singles as Abbatiello edged Szikla, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7.

Fairfield returns to action on March 18 when it opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play against Saint Peter's at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
