UConn Stops Men's Tennis 5-2

STORRS, Conn. - The Fairfield men's tennis team was stopped by UConn, 5-2, this afternoon in a hard fought match on the road. With the loss, the Stags even their record to 5-5 while the Huskies improve to 4-5 overall.

Seniors Glen Gannon and Balazs Szikla picked up the Stags' singles victories. At No. 3 singles, Gannon defeated Joey Michaels, 6-3, 7-6(2). At the fourth spot, Szikla outlasted Andrew Marcus, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2).

Sophomore Ryan Berthod battled with UConn's Joe Goldstein at No. 1 singles, but Goldstein was able to come away with the 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) victory. George Laffey took the Huskies' Ben Schueler to three sets but fell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Mark Kremheller fell to Christian Malerba, 6-0, 6-2 while Chris Piasecki fell to Tom Cook, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

UConn took two out of the doubles matches for the point. The Stags lone win came at No. 1 doubles as Rob Ferrante and Berthod defeated Goldstein and Schueler, 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Michaels and Malerba edged Gannon and Szikla, 8-6. At the third spot, Laffey and Kremheller were topped 8-4 by Marcus and Cook.

Fairfield resumes MAAC play on March 29 when it heads to Siena. The Stags then return home to host Hofstra on March 30 at 2pm.
