
Men's Tennis Sinks Siena 5-2

LATHAM, N.Y. - Fairfield snapped a two-match skid with a 5-2 victory against Siena on Saturday night to open MAAC play. With the win, the Stags moved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Siena falls to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Siena started the night by capturing the doubles point with victories in two out of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Siena's Nick Rutherford and Kevin Gioia edged the freshman tandem of Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.), by a score of 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) and Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) were defeated by Jeremy Deuel and Jose Loren. 8-4.
The Stags' only doubles win came at the third spot as sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) and junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) downed Robert Cooperman and Stefan Putyera, 8-2.
Fairfield dominated in the singles matches, however, taking five out of six. At the top spot, Berthod came back from a first set loss to defeat Deuel, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, by a margin of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Ferrante beat Rutherford, 6-3, 6-2 while Laffey downed Putyera, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Gannon nipped Jay Godbole, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles while Palumbo pushed past Loren, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
The Saints only single victory came at the fifth spot as Gioia defeated Szikla, 6-2, 6-2.
