
Men's Tennis Nipped By Hofstra 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team was edged by Hofstra, 4-3, in a tightly contested non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
Hofstra (4-6-1) began the day by sweeping the doubles point from Fairfield (6-6). At No. 1 doubles, Stian Tvedt and Tytus Stempniewicz edged out Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.), 9-8(8), to snap the duo's three-match winning streak.
At No. 2 doubles, the duo of Andy Cha and Luka Djordevic defeated Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) and George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) by a score of 8-4. At the third spot, Matt Wacks and Nenad Radakovic topped Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) and Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.), 8-5.
The singles competition was tough with the two teams splitting the matches. At No. 2 singles, Ferrante took Tvedt to a super tie-breaker to pick up the 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 win. At No. 4 singles, Gannon downed Cha, 6-2, 6-0. Piasecki was able to earn a win at No. 6 singles against Alex Hosner, 6-1, 2-3, ret.
At No. 1 singles, Djordevic outlasted Berthod, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Laffey fell to Radakovic, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) was stopped by Stempniewicz, 7-5, 6-1.
Fairfield returns to MAAC play on April 1 when it travels to Marist. The Stags return home on April 2 to host Saint Peter's at 3 p.m. at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
