Men's Tennis Downs St. Peter's 6-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  - The Fairfield University men's tennis team improved to 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with an impressive 6-1 victory against Saint Peter's this afternoon at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.

Fairfield (7-7) won all but one match on the day. The Stags started things off by sweeping the doubles point from the Peacocks (10-8, 1-2 MAAC). At the top spot, the pair of freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) defeated Tony Wilket and Chris Frakes, 8-4. The duo of Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) and George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) won by the same margin at No. 2 doubles, defeating Peter Czajka and Jake Baranowski. At No. 3 doubles, Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) and Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) defeated Serge Igel and JJ Gramatica, 9-8 (4).

In singles play, Berthod downed Igel, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles while Ferrante defeated Czajka, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. At No. 4 singles, Gannon fought back from a first set loss to defeat Wilket, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 5 singles, Palumbo edged Frakes, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.) checked into the sixth spot to defeat Baranowski, 6-0, 6-1.

Saint Peter's lone victory came at No. 3 singles as Gramatica defeated Laffey, 6-3, 6-3.

Fairfield returns to action this weekend travelling to Niagara on April 5 and Colgate on April 6.
