FAIRFIELD, Conn. -
The Fairfield University men's tennis team improved to 4-2 in the
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 10-9 overall with an
impressive 7-0 victory against Loyola College this afternoon. The
Stags swept the singles competition from the Greyhounds (8-7, 1-2
MAAC) and took two out of the three doubles matches.
At the top spot, sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) returned to his winning ways with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Scott Gannon, brother of the Stags' Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.). At No. 2 singles, freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Matt McDaniel. At third singles, freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J.) upended Tim Koch, 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Dan D'Agostino at No. 5 singles. With the win, Palumbo improves to 15-7 on the year and sets a career best for singles victories.
Gannon notched a 6-3, 6-4 win against Doug Alban at fourth singles while junior Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.) rounded out the group with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Jamie Russo at the sixth spot.
In doubles action, Laffey and Gannon teamed up to defeat McDaniel and Koch, 8-5, while Palumbo and senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) topped D'Agostino and Russo, 8-1.
The Stags host Rider tomorrow, April 13, in a Senior Day match-up beginning at noon. The 2008 MAAC Tennis Championships will be held April 18-20 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
