Men's Tennis Blanks Rider 6-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  - The Fairfield University men's tennis team captured its final regular season match on Sunday, defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider University 6-0 on Senior Day.  The win improves the Stags record to 11-9 overall and 5-2 against MAAC opponents.

Sophomore Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) captured a hard-fought victory at number one singles, defeating Casey Jedlinski 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.   Freshman George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J) dropped the first set at number-two singles, but rallied to earn the win, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.  Third singles was another thrilling three-set affair as senior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.), defeated Will Haight 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The Stags completed the sweep with three two-set victories in the other singles events.  Senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) captured the fourth-singles 6-2, 6-3 over Marc Ashed.  Junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Chris Esposito at number-five singles, while funior Chris Piasecki (Norwalk, Conn.) rounded out the day with a 6-1,6-1 victory over Rob Olsen at number-six singles.

The singles matches were played first due to the potential for inclement weather, and with the match decided by singles, the doubles matches were abandoned.

Next up for the Stags is the 2008 MAAC Tennis Championships which will be held April 18-20 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
