Tennis Heads To 2008 MAAC Championships April 18-20

The men's and women's tennis teams head to the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships April 18-20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Both teams enter the MAAC Championships as the number three seed. 

The men's team, which forged an 11-9 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the MAAC, will face sixth-seeded Loyola. The match will begin at 11 a.m. on April 18. The two teams met on April 12 as the Stags earned a 7-0 win against Greyhounds. 

Junior Chip Palumbo leads the Stags with a 16-7 singles record is riding a five-match winning streak. Sophomore Ryan Berthod is 14-14 at No. 1 singles while freshman Rob Ferrante is 13-9 overall this season. Freshman George Laffey has won his last five matches to improve to 10-13 on the season. 

In doubles, the duo of Berthod and Ferrante are 12-8 on the season at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, Laffey and senior Glen Gannon are 4-0 in the conference and 7-5 overall this season. At No. 3 doubles, Palumbo and senior Balazs Szikla are 3-0 in MAAC play and 9-5 on the season. 

On the women's side, the Stags won their fourth-straight match on April 15 to wrap up the regular season and secure the third seed with a 5-2 MAAC record. Fairfield will face sixth-seeded Siena on April 18 with the match beginning at 3:30 p.m. The two teams last met on March 29 with the Stags coming away with the 5-2 win. 

Sophomore Dana Postupack leads the Stags with a 16-13 overall record and has won her last six matches heading into the MAAC Championships. Sophomore Paulina Rys and senior Courtney Price have 12 wins each while Michaela Cerrone has notched 11.

Postupack and Rys have been strong for the Stags at No. 1 doubles, forging a 15-11 record, which includes a 4-1 mark in conference play. At No. 2 doubles, the sophomore tandem of Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg are 3-1 in MAAC play this season. At No. 3 doubles, Marisa Voloshin and Alyssa Ruiz are 4-0 in conference play and 5-1 overall.
