
Rob Ferrante Named MAAC Men's Tennis Co-Rookie of Year; Chip Palumbo Named to First Team

EDISON, N.J. - Fairfield University freshman Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Co-Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-MAAC Second Team while junior Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) was named All-MAAC First Team to headline the postseason awards handed out by the league. In addition, Palumbo and senior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) earned All-MAAC Second Team honors at No. 3 doubles.
Ferrante earned his accolades at No. 2 singles after a stellar rookie campaign. He went 15-10 overall in singles play including a 3-1 record in MAAC contests. He was 15-15 overall in doubles, which included a 3-3 mark in conference play. His 30 combined wins tied him for third most on the team. During the fall season, he and partner Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) advanced to the second round of doubles competition at the ITA Regionals. He shares co-rookie honors with Marist's Marcus von Nordheim.
Palumbo had a terrific junior season, going 18-8 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC en route to All-MAAC first team honors at No. 6 singles. He had a combined record of 34-17 on the year to lead the team. He closed out the year by winning eight of his last 10 matches, which included a seven match winning streak. During the fall season, he earned a silver medal at the ECAC Open Championships.
Palumbo and Szikla comprised a strong tandem at the third doubles going 12-5 overal1 and 3-0 in conference play. The duo closed out the season by winning their last four matches and posting a record of 7-3 in their final 10.During the fall season, the pair captured a title at the Fairfield Doubles Festival.
All three players helped Fairfield advance to the MAAC Championship finals for the first time since the 2002-03 season and to a second place finish. The Stags went 13-10 overall, tying the program record for victories, and 5-2 in MAAC play.
