Men's Tennis Falls To Army 6-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The men's tennis team opened the spring season with a tough 6-1 loss at Army. Junior Rob Ferrante notched the lone point for the Stags with a singles victory.

Ferrante picked up the win at third singles in a come-from-behind effort against John Lucero. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Ferrante evened things up with a 6-4 win in the second set and sealed the win, 10-3, in the tie-breaker.

At first singles, Joe Michalisin battled it out with Gary Kushnirovich over three sets. Michalisin took the first set, 6-3, but was edged by Kushnirovich, 6-3, 6-2, in the final two sets.

It was also a three-set tilt at second singles as Dan Sauter took on Donald Van Velzer. Sauter dropped the first set, 6-4, won the second, 6-2, but was edged by Van Velzer, 6-3, in the third.

Senior Ryan Berthod had a back-and-forth match against Tripp Johnson at fourth singles, but was edged, 6-4, 8-6, 7-6(5).

At fifth singles, Erik Kremheller fell to Chris Albornoz, 6-3, 6-0. At sixth singles, Mark Kremheller fell to Alex Holland, 6-1, 6-2.

The Black Knights took the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. At first doubles, Michalisin and Ferrante were nipped, 9-8, by Kushnirovich and Richard Shelton. At second doubles, Berthod and Sauter fell to Albornoz and Lucero, 8-4. At third doubles, Erik Kremheller and Bob Kelly fell to Johnson and Holland, 8-2.

The Stags (0-1) return to action on February 6 when they host Stony Brook at Stamford Indoor.
