SIMSBURY, Conn. -- The Fairfield men's tennis team opened the second portion of it 2006-07 campaign on a high note as the Stags defeated Hartford, 6-1, this afternoon at the Simsbury Tennis House.

The Stags took five out of six singles matches on the day. At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) defeated Jeff Cote, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) while No. 3 singles, senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) downed Kyle O'Leary, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) blanked Emmett Drake in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles, while junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary/Austrian) downed Brian Reilly, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. In his first match of the year, junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) defeated Aaron Kooden, 8-1.

Fairfield also won the doubles point. Berthod and Szikla edged Cote and O'Leary, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles while Morrison and Gannon defeated Drake and Kooden, 8-1.

Fairfield resumes play on February 10 when the Stags face Holy Cross.
