CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Fairfield men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season this afternoon falling to Boston College, 7-0. With the loss, the Stags fall to 2-1 on the year while the Eagles improve to 3-5.
Boston College opened the day by sweeping the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Jason Sechrist and Thomas Nolan edged senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) and sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.), 8-5. Soma Kesthley and Sam Wagner teamed up to defeat junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary/Austrian) and freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, while Alex Rastorgoev and Brian Garber defeated senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola)and junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), 8-2, at third doubles.
At No. 1 singles, Fernando picked up the first set against Sechrist but would drop the final two sets as Sechrist picked up the 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win. At No. 2 singles, Berthod was edged by Nolan, 6-2, 6-4. Morrison fell to Rastorgev, 2-6, 1-6, at No. 3 singles while Palumbo was downed 1-6, 4-6 by Wagner.
At No. 5 singles, Dennis Reardon was able to edge Szikla, 6-3, 6-2 while Geoff Mueller closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Glen Gannon at No. 6 singles.
Fairfield will play its final indoor match on March 2 when it faces Monmouth in Stamford, Conn.
