ORLANDO, Fla. - The Fairfield men's tennis opened spring break play on a down note falling to Carthage College, 5-2, this afternoon. With the loss, the Stags fall to 3-2 on the season while Carthage improves to 6-2.
Sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary/Austrian) were the two individual winners for the Stags. Palumbo picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Dave Sands at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Szikla record a 6-1, 6-2 decision against J.T. Delk.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) was edged by Jack Schiro, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) also had a close match at No. 2 singles, but fell to Sergio Lopez, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) fell at No. 1 singles to Miguel Yunes, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles while junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) lost to Phil Hammond, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, Morrison and Gannon picked up the lone victory for the Stags defeating Delk and Hammond, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Fairfield continues action in Florida facing Bentley College and Michigan Tech on March 12.
