KINGSTON, R.I. - The Fairfield men's tennis team posted an exciting 6-1 victory against the University of Rhode Island this afternoon. With the win, the Stags improve to 7-5 overall while the Rams fall to 8-10 on the season.
Fairfield began the day by winning two out of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. At the top spot, senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) and sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) downed Henrik Almstrom and Dixon Simmons, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) and senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) beat out Adam Gart and Mark Marcello, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) and junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) were edged by Andrew Costin and James McGuire, 8-7(6).
Fernando earned the victory at No. 1 singles beating out Almstrom, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Morrison took Simmons to a super tie-breaker, but was able to pull out the 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory. At No. 4 singles, Szikla defeated Gart, 6-0, 7-5. At No. 5 singles, Palumbo edged out McGuire, 7-6(5), 6-1 while Gannon picked up the 6-1, 6-3 victory against Stephen Conroy at No. 6 singles.
The Rams' lone singles victory came at the second spot as Costin defeated Berthod, 6-3, 6-3.
Fairfield will host Fordham on March 29 at 3 p.m.
