FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team posted its fourth win in its last five matches with an exciting 6-1 victory against conference foe Siena on Senior Day at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
The Stags improve to 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 9-6 overall with the victory. The Saints drop to 3-2 in league action and 6-6 on the year.
Senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) won his fourth straight match at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Stefan Putyera to improve to 15-8 on the season.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) blanked Nick Rutherford, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Kevin Gioia at No. 4 singles while sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Chris Auffredou at No. 5 singles. Junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) rounded out the victories at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mike Aliotta.
At No. 1 singles, senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) fell to Jeremy Deuel, 6-2, 6-3.
Fairfield came out strong in doubles, taking two out of three matches. At No. 2 doubles, the duo of Gannon and Szikla defeated Putyera and Auffredou, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Morrison and Berthod downed Jay Godbole and Jose Loren, 8-3, for their fifth-straight victory as partners. At the top spot, Deuel and Rutherford were able to edge out Fernando and Palumbo, 9-8(7).
Fairfield will continue its five-match homestand this week, hosting Marist on April 3 and UConn on April 5.
