FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team fell to Marist College, 6-1, this afternoon at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The Red Foxes moved to 5-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 12-2 on the season while the Stags fall to 9-7 and 2-2 in the conference.
Junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) picked up the Stags' victory on the day in an exciting match. After dropping the first set, 3-6, against Federico Rolon, Gannon roared back to defeat him 6-2, 12-10 in the super tiebreaker.
Senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) had his four-match winning streak snapped at No. 3 singles, falling to Christian Coley, 6-0, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) fell to Pedro Genovese, 6-3, 7-6(3). At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) was defeated by Loic Sessagesimi, 6-0, 6-3.
Junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) could not get past Gregory Marks No. 4 singles, falling 6-1, 6-2 while sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) fell to Ray Josephs, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Marist took all three doubles matches. At the top spot, Fernando and Palumbo lost 8-3 to Genovese and Rolon. At No. 2 doubles, Marks and Josephs defeated Gannon and Szikla, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Morrson and Berthod suffered their first loss in five matches to Sessagesimi and Coley, 8-4.
Fairfield plays its final home match of the year on April 5 against UConn.
