WOODBRIDGE, Conn. - It may have taken just under four hours to play, but the result was worth the wait as the Fairfield men's tennis team defeated the University of Connecticut, 4-3, this evening at Tennis Central.
Five of the six singles matches on the night went to three sets, including senior Zachary Morrison's victory at No. 3 singles that sealed the win for the Stags (10-7). Morrison posted the decisive 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 win against Ben Schueler.
At No. 1 singles, senior Jonathan Fernando defeated Joey Michaels, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod was able to defeat Joe Goldstein, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(2). At No. 4 singles, Balazs Szikla pulled out an exciting 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory against Nate Carvalho.
Sophomore Chip Palumbo fell to Christian Malerba, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 5 singles while junior Glen Gannon fell to Tom Cook, 7-5, 6-1, 10-6, at No. 6 singles.
The Huskies (2-10) started the night off by capturing the doubles point. At the top spot, Fernando and Palumbo defeated Goldstein and Schueler, 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, Michaels and Malerba teamed up to defeat Gannon and Szikla, 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, Carvalho and Cook were able to edged Morrison and Berthod, 8-4, to take the point.
Fairfield will resume conference play on April 11 at Manhattan College.
