BALTIMORE, Md. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team tied the school record for wins in a season with 7-0 victory against Loyola this afternoon. The win marks the third consecutive year that the Stags have posted 12 wins in a season as they move to 12-8 overall and finish Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a 4-3 record.
At No. 1 singles, senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) defeated Scott Gannon, 6-2, 6-3 while at No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) defeated Ben Epstein, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) set a career high with his 19th singles victory of the season by edging Matt McDaniel 5-7, 9-7, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win against Rob Palliser at No. 4 singles, while sophomore Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) defeated Tim Koch, 6-1, 7-6, at the fifth spot. Junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) rounded out the victories with a 7-6, 6-2 decision against Peter Edgar.
The Stags took all three doubles matches. At the top spot, Fernando and Palumbo won their 15th match as partners defeating Scott Gannon and Epstein. At No. 2 doubles, Glen Gannon and Szikla defeated Koch and Palliser, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Morrison and Berthod downed McDaniel and Chad Morrow, 8-3.
Fairfield will close the regular season on Monday, April 16 at Villanova. The 2007 MAAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships begins on April 20 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
