FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The men's tennis team opened its 2006-07 campaign with a solid outing at the Fairfield Doubles Festival this afternoon. Like the women's team yesterday, the Stags had two pairs reach the semifinals in their respective flights while a third placed fifth.
The duo of freshman Ryan Berthod and junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) reached the semifinals of Flight Two but did not advance, falling to Quinnipiac, 8-2.
In Flight Three, sophomore Chris Bane (Manchester, Mass.), senior Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Bob Kelly combined to reach the semifinals. The Stags, however, fell to eventual flight winner Quinnipiac, 8-0.
Senior Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) and sophomore Michael Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) earned fifth place in Flight One with an exciting 8-6 victory against Rhode Island.
Quinnipiac was a winner in two out of the three flights. Quinnipiac defeated Queens College, 8-5, to capture Flight One and edged out UConn, 9-8, to win Flight Three. Rhode Island took Flight Two with an 8-5 victory against Quinnipiac.
Fairfield returns to action Sept. 23-24 when it heads to the ECAC North Open Championships in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
