STORRS, Conn. - The men's tennis team picked up several wins during the opening day of play at the UConn Invitational on Friday.

In Flight One Singles, Jonathan Fernando advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 victory over Ben Evendon of Monmouth. Freshman Ryan Berthod was edged by Doruk Baglan of Hartford, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 16.

In Flight Two Singles, Michael Palumbo edged Boston University's DanielWeinstein, 3-6,7-5,10-7 to advance to the round of 16. Also advancing was Zachary Morrison who defeated Kevin Guidicipietro of Sacred Heart, 6-3, 6-2.

In Flight Three Singles, Ben Geller dropped his play-in match to Jay DeSanto, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, two Stag pairs advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight B. The pair of Szikla and Morrison downed Holy Cross `3' by a score of 8-1to advance to the Round of 16. They followed that win with an 8-2 victory over Marist to advance to the quarterfinals. The duo of Bob Kelly and Tim Mahoney defeated UConn, 8-5, in the round of 16 to advance.

In Flight A, Fernando and Palumbo teamed up to defeat Holy Cross, 8-6, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. The duo of Berthod and Chris Bane were edged by Rhode Island, 9-7, in the round of 16.

Fairfield will continue competition at the UConn Invitational tomorrow and Sunday.
