STORRS, Conn. - Junior Balazs Szikla advanced to the semifinals of his flight to highlight Fairfield's afternoon at the UConn Invitational.
Szikla advanced to the Flight Three semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Holy Cross' Tom Moran. Szikla defeated Boston University's Davidson Chudacoff 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 to advance to today's quarterfinals.
In Flight Two, Marist's Ray Josephs defeated Michael Palumbo, 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile, Zachary Morrison fell to Monmouth's Pedro Bruno, 6-2, 4-6, 7-10, in the round of 16.
In Flight One, Jonathan Fernando fell to Artur Muller of Hartford, 4-6, 5-7, in the Round of 16. In Flight Four, Bob Kelly fell to UConn's Joel Gamoran, 3-6, 2-6, in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, the pair of Fernando and Palumbo fell to Marist, 8-4, in the quarterfinals of Flight A.
In Flight B, two Fairfield pairs advanced to the semifinals but were unable to advance. The duo of Kelly and Tim Mahoney were edged by UConn, 8-5 while the pair of Szikla and Morrison were clipped by Quinnipiac, 9-7.
In the quarterfinals, Kelly and Mahoney defeated Boston University `4' by a score of 8-6, while Szikla and Morrison downed Boston University `3' by a score of 8-5.
The Stags will wrap up action at the UConn Invitational tomorrow, Oct. 1, in Storrs, Conn.
