HAMDEN, Conn. - The Stags had a solid opening round of the Quinnipiac Invitational this afternoon picking up five singles victories.

In Flight A, Jonathan Fernando downed UConn's Joey Michaels, 7-6 (6-0), 6-1, while Ryan Berthod notched the 6-2, 6-0 win over Sacred Heart's Kevin Guidicipietro.

In Flight C, Chris Bane battled with Sacred Heart's Matt Cook and pulled out the 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 win. Also posting a victory was Balazs Szikla, who blanked Sacred Heart's Joe Lanciotti, 6-0, 6-0.

In Flight D, Ben Geller notched the Stags' fifth win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Sacred Heart's Kevin Pustelniak. Despite a hard-fought match, Tim Mahoney was defeated by Quinnipiac's Charles Feldman by a score of 7-6(3-0), 6-4.

Two Stags ran into some very tough competition in Flight B as Chip Palumbo and Zachary Morrison both fell in their opening matches. Palumbo was defeated by Bucknell's Zach Hascoe, 6-2, 6-3, while Morrison fell to Bucknell's Jon Brenner, 6-2, 7-6(4-0).

Fairfield will continue action at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
