Stags To Face-Off With The Mount For Fordham Holiday Tournament Title

Dec 30, 2007

The Fairfield University women's basketball team, 9-3 on the year, will take on Mount St. Mary's in the championship game (game notes) of the Fordham Holiday Tournament, at 3 p.m. on Sunday.  The Stags advanced on the strength of a 55-48 win over Troy University on Saturday, in the first round, coming from a five-point halftime deficit to win the contest.

Today's game can be heard live on WVOF 88.5 FM and on the internet, with play-by-play man John Cummings and color analyst, Cara Murphy, calling all the action. Livestats are available through the Fordham website.

The Mount has won back-to-back games, including a 56-43 win over the host Rams on Saturday, to improve to 3-8 on the year.  The Mount opened the year 1-1, before dropping seven straight contests, before its current two-game winning streak.  Tiffany Green is the only player on the team averaging in double-digits, scoring 10.4 points per game, and leads the team with 26 assists.

The Stags scored the first six points of the second half against Troy, and would lead by as many as 10 points on the way to their third straight win on Saturday.  Stephanie Geehan had a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win, while Sabra Wrice scored 16 points to pace the offense.  Baendu Lowenthal played only 20 minutes because of foul trouble, but finished with 13 points and nine boards, eight of them on the offensive glass.

Fairfield, which began a five-game roadtrip on Saturday, is now 2-0 in neutral site games, having defeated North Dakota State at Cal-Poly in winning the Holiday Beach Classic. The Stags have never won two in-season tournaments in the same year (when they were not the host) and had won just three in-season tournaments all-time, excluding Warner Classic contests at Alumni Hall.

The Stags conclude non-conference play on Sunday with The Mount, and return to MAAC action in the New Year, Saturday, Jan. 5, at Marist.
