
Women's Basketball Begins New Year Saturday At Marist

The Fairfield University women's basketball team (game notes), winners of four straight, return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday, Jan. 5, play at Marist College at 7:30 p.m. The Stags are 10-3 on the year and 0-2 in the league, while the Red Foxes, who have won two straight games, are 12-2 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play.
The meeting will be the second of the year for the two squads, who met on Dec. 9 at Alumni Hall, a 55-44 win for the Red Foxes. Sabra Wrice scored 18 for the Stags in that game, while Stephanie Geehan finished with 12 rebounds. Fairfield shot 30 percent from the field in the game, hitting 18-60 from the floor, but only 2-15 from behind the arc. The Stags did have an advantage in rebounding, 42-25 for the game, and 21-4 on the offensive glass.
Fairfield has won four straight games, with wins over Boston College, St. Francis (NY), Troy and Mount St. Mary's since last meeting the Red Foxes. The game is the third MAAC game for each team and marks the final meeting of the regular season.
Joe Frager has now amasses 199 career wins, 189 in nine seasons at Southern Connecticut State and now 10 in his first 13 games with the Stags. Wrice looks to become just the 12th player in program history to score over 1,300 career points, and is averaging 18.4 points per game in the last five outings. Baendu Lowenthal had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win over The Mount, while Geehan had a career-high equaling 15 points and 10 boards, for her fourth double-double of the year, against Troy.
The Stags are in the midst of a five-game road trip, which continues next weekend in Western New York. Fairfield will play at Canisius on Thursday at noon and Niagara on Saturday, at 2 p.m., before returning home on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
