Second Half Rally Falls Short Against Iona, Stags Fall 64-57

Jan 27, 2008

The Fairfield University women's basketball team saw it four-game winning streak snapped 64-57 by Iona College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  With the loss, the Stags fall to 14-6 overall and 4-5 in the league, while the Gaels improve to 12-8 on the year and 6-3 in league play.

Fairfield shot 47.5 percent, 19-40 from the field in the second half, out scoring Iona 40-32, but it was not enough to overcome a first half scoring drought.  The Stags led the game early, 5-2, on a Megan Caskin three-pointer 2:03 into the game, but that would be the team's last points for 11:25.  During the drought Iona unleashed a 21-0 run, to take a 23-5 advantage.  Fairfield began the comeback in the final minute of the first half, outscoring the Gaels 12-9 in the final 6:32 of the period.

Iona struck first in the second half, 31 seconds into the period, to take a 17-point advantage.  Down 34-17 Fairfield hit 19 of its final 39 shots to close the gap to as few as four points, 47-43, with 5:04 to play as Sabra Wrice put home a fast break lay-up after a steal at the other end.  Iona's Lauren Defalco answered that with her only made three-point field goal of the game, pushing the lead back to seven points, and the Stags would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Wrice led all scorers with 18 points in the game, hitting 7-18 from the field.  She also had eight rebounds, a game-high, with five on the offensive glass.  Wrice recorded a career-high seven steals in the game, equaling the second-best single-game effort in Arena at Harbor Yard history.

Baendu Lowenthal, who played just three minutes in the first half, just missed out on her second consecutive double-double.  She hit 8-12 from the field in the second half, and was 1-2 at the free throw line, to finish with 17 points, to go along with eight rebounds.  Shiryell Moore had four points, four offensive rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of action.

The Stags shot 34.2 percent from the field for the game, including 6-33, 18.2 percent in the first half of play.  Fairfield opened the game 2-24 from the field, 8.7 percent, but hit 13-49 the remainder of the contest.  Fairfield did out rebound Iona, 45-35, including a 26-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

Iona was led by the 14-point effort of Defalco, who also recorded four steals.  Anna McLean was the other Gael in double figures, with 10 points and six boards, while Tiara Headen had nine points and eight rebounds.

The Stags continue their three-game home stand on Friday, Feb. 1, when they host Niagara University at Alumni Hall at 7 p.m.  Fairfield is asking its fans to ‘Pack The House' that night, in an NCAA challenge contest with the other women's basketball programs in the country.  Fans wearing red to the game with Niagara will be admitted for $1.
