Women's Basketball Takes Show On The Road To Iona Friday At 5 p.m.

The Fairfield University women's basketball team (game notes) winners of six of its last seven games makes the short trip down I-95 to New Rochelle, N.Y., for a 5 p.m. matchup with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College on Friday.  The Stags enter the contest with a 16-6 overall record and in fifth-place in the MAAC at 6-5.  The Gaels are 14-8 on the year, winning their last four games, and are in second place in the league with an 8-3 mark.

The two teams met on Jan. 27 at the Arena at Harbor Yard, with the Gaels pulling out a 64-57 victory.  The Stags out scored Iona in the second half, and held a 26-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, but could not rally back from an 18-point deficit in the first half.  Baendu Lowenthal scored 17 points and had eight rebounds, while Sabra Wrice scored a game-high 18 points for the Stags.

Since that game the Stags have won a pair of home games, 50-44 over Niagara and 72-58 over Canisius.  Tara Flaherty paced the Stags in the win over the Griffs on Sunday, with her first career double-double, scoring a career-high 14 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.  Wrice was again the team's leading scorer wtih 24 points, including a 12-12 effort at the free throw line.  She knocked down 10 of those in the final 3:07 as Fairfield went 15-16 from the line as a team in that stretch to secure the win.
