
Werts, Caskin Lead Stags From Behind To Beat Siena, 60-57

The Fairfield University women's basketball team won its eighth game in time in 10 tries on Saturday afternoon, defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Siena College60-57 at the Arena at Harbor Yard. With the win the Stags improve to 18-7 on the year and 8-6 in conference action, while the Saints fall to 9-15 overall and 5-9 in league play.
The game featured 10 tied scores and 13 lead changes with the Saints holding the largest lead of the game, 18-11, with 8:54 left in the first half. Fairfield led three times in the first half, but by only one-point each time, but the Saints finished the half with a three-point advantage, 28-25.
Siena started the second half with a 6-2 run; to again equal the largest lead of the game, with 16:06 to play in the contest. Fairfield would tie the score, 41-41 with 10:03 to play and took the lead on a Sabra Wrice three-point field goal, with 8:15 to play. The next six minutes of action would see both teams lead, with the lead changing hands seven times and three ties in the stretch.
Fairfield would take the lead for good as Megan Caskin knocked down a field goal with 1:57 to play, for a 57-55 advantage. Shireyll Moore recorded a steal 46 seconds later leading to a Wrice lay-up with 61 seconds to play and a 59-55 advantage. Melissa Manzer scored with 44 seconds remaining, but after a Moore free throw with 15 seconds left, the Stags did not allow the Saints to get a shot off for the win.
Caskin scored in double-digits for the first time in her 82 game collegiate career, finishing with 10 points. Meka Werts shot 4-8 from the field, with a pair of three-pointers, to lead team with 12 points. Moore scored eight points, shooting 3-5 from the field, while dishing out a career-high six assists, against no turnovers. Wrice scored 10 points, while Lauren Groom and Baendu Lowenthal each contributed eight points. Tara Flaherty led the team with seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while playing 14 minutes.
Siena's Laura Menty led all scorers with 31 points, the sixth-best single-game individual effort in the history of the Arena at Harbor Yard. She was 10-12 from the floor for the game, while the rest of the squad shot 10-33. Heather Stec had 10 points, and joined Menty as the team leader with five rebounds.
Fairfield shot the ball 46.2 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 24-52, but were 3-17 from behind the arc. The Saints were 22-45 as a team for the field, with a 1-10 effort from downtown. Siena out rebounded the Stags 28-25, but the Stags held an 8-6 offensive rebounding advantage. The Stags forced 19 Siena turnovers while committing 11 of their own.
The Stags hosted Think Pink at the double-header, which saw the men's team defeat Rider, and raised over $1,100 for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The Stags play the final home game of the 2007-08 season on Monday at the Arena at Harbor Yard versus MAAC foe Saint Peter's. The game is scheduled for a 5:04 p.m. tip-off, with a pre-game ceremony honoring the team's senior class beginning 15 minutes prior to the tip-off.
