Lowenthal Tallies 1,000th Point in 60-43 Win at Loyola

Fairfield University junior Baendu Lowenthal (Riverside, N.J.) scored her 1,000th career point while two other Stags were in double figures to help power Fairfield to a 60-43 victory against Loyola (12-16, 7-11 MAAC) in the regular season finale at Reitz Arena.

Lowenthal netted her 1,000th career point at the 15:52 mark in the second half as her lay-up put the Stags on top 40-31. Lowenthal, who became the 22nd Fairfield player to reach the milestone, finished the day with 15 points to bring her career total to 1,006 points.

Senior Sabra Wrice (Riverside, N.J.) led all scorers with 18 points while Lauren Groom (Westbury, N.Y.) posted 10 points and five boards.

In the first half, the Stags opened an 18-14 lead after Wrice converted a three-point play, but the Greyhounds used back-to-back buckets by Meghan Wood to tie the game 18-18 with 8:45 left to play. Fairfield picked up the defensive pressure and went on a 13-4 run over the next six minutes. The Stags pushed their lead to 27-22 on a breakaway jumper by Wrice at the 3:43 mark. The Stags took their largest lead of the half, 31-22, on a pair of free throws by Lowenthal. Loyola quickly closed the gap pulling within 31-28 on a three-pointer by Siobhan Prior with 1:20 left to play. Wrice sank two free throws with 55 seconds left to play to give the Stags a 33-28 lead heading into the break.

Fairfield came out of the break strong going on a 13-3 run to open up a 46-31 lead as Loyola went cold from the floor with nearly nine minutes in between field goals. During that stretch the Greyhounds managed on a free throw before Candice Walker hit a three-pointer at the 9:12 mark. After a pair of Greyhound baskets, Fairfield held Loyola scoreless for the next four minutes to open up a 53-37 lead.

Fairfield finishes the regular season with a (21-8, 11-7 MAAC) record. The Stags next stop is the 2008 MAAC Women's Basketball Tournament, March 6-9, at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.
