Stags Tournament Run Ends 74-69 At The Hands Of Iona
Mar 8, 2008
The Fairfield University women's basketball team had its 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship run end on Saturday, 74-69, at the hands of the number two-seed Iona College.
The loss drops the Stags to 22-9, but is not necessarily the end of the campaign. Several avenues, including an at-large bid, exist for the team to earn a bid to the WNIT. The Stags posted the second most wins among the 10 league schools, while also boasting a 10-1 non-conference record that included wins over Boston College and Richmond.
The Stags built a 17-10 advantage 6:55 into the game, but saw the offense go cold, while Iona heated up. The Stags would not score for nearly seven minutes, as the Gaels rattled off a 15-0 run. Fairfield cut that eight point deficit to three points, 27-24, but saw Iona finished the half on an 8-4 run, for a 35-28 halftime lead.
Fairfield stormed out of the intermission with a 12-5 run to take a 41-10 advantage with 15:42 to play. Iona scored four straight points preceding a Lauren Groom three-pointer that tied the game at 43-43, 32 seconds later, but the Stags would not lead again.
Iona (19-12) answered the Groom three-pointer with a 7-2 run, taking a 50-45 lead with 12:34 to play. The would remain in the single digits with the Stags closing to within three points, 60-57 on a pair of Meka Werts free throws with 3:44 to play. The Gaels put forth an 11-4 run, including going 7-7 at the stripe to take the largest lead of the game, 71-61 with 62 seconds remaining. Groom knocked down a three-pointer with a second remaining for the final margin.
Sabra Wrice led all scorers with 18 points, knocking down 7-16 from the field. She was 4-8 from behind the arc, helping to move her to 1,578 career points, seventh all-time in program history. Should that have been her last game in a Stags uniform, Wrice will finish fourth all-time with 143 career three-pointers, in 119 career games, second all-time, and 103 career starts, seventh all-time. She also has 220 career steals, fourth all-time.
Groom finished with a career-high equaling 16 points, including 4-8 from behind the three-point line. Baendu Lowenthal had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Werts finished with 11 points and three assists. Megan Caskin had six assists, giving her 18 in two games of the tournament.
