Fairfield Basketball to "Think Pink" at February 16 Doubleheader
Jan 29, 2008
Fairfield University will be taking part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) “Think Pink” initiative, joining each member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and over 600 school’s nationwide. The Stags have designated the February 16 double-header at the Arena at Harbor Yard as the school’s “Think Pink” Day. The women will host Siena at noon, while the men, who will also participate in the initiative, will play Rider.
“Think Pink is a wonderful program that is bringing colleges and universities around the nation together in the fight against breast cancer,” said Fairfield Senior Associate Athletic Director, Alison Sexton. “This is something that can touch everyone at some point in their lives, and we are asking that the Fairfield community comes out and supports this effort to raise money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.”
The primary focus of the WBCA’s “Think Pink” is to raise awareness of breast cancer around the nation. All fans that attend the February 16 double-header, and wear pink attire, will receive a gift from Fairfield Athletics. Additionally fans that make a financial contribution that afternoon will receive a ticket to the Monday, February 18 double-header, which has the women playing Saint Peter’s and the men playing Marist.
All funds raised at the double-header will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund was announced on December 3, 2007, during the Jimmy V Classic. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will raise money in the fight against cancer. Yow is the head women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University, and has been a head-coach at the collegiate level for 36 years. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and is currently battling the disease for the third time.
Fans will also have the opportunity to enter a raffle that will include prizes such as game-worn Think Pink shooting shirts, autographed by players and coaches, and items from several supporting organizations. There will be several silent auctions at the game that will give fans a chance to bid on Fairfield summer sport camp admissions and autographed team basketballs.
The Fairfield Office of Health and Wellness Education will participate in the event, along with the Colleges Against Cancer Club, an on-campus student-organization. The groups will have an information table in the concourse of the Arena with pamphlets and handouts for those who are interested.
For tickets to the Feb. 16 double-header please contact the Fairfield ticket office at 203-254-4136 or visit tickemaster.com or the Arena at Harbor Yard box office.
