Women's Basketball Defeats Bridgeport 80-41 In Thursday Exhibition

The Fairfield University women's basketball team earned an 80-41 exhibition win over the University of Bridgeport Thursday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  The Stags had three players score 13 or more points in the victory.

Stephanie Geehan had a double-double to lead the Stags, with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while leading the team with five blocked shots.  She shot 57 percent, 8-14, from the field and had eight of her rebounds on the offensive glass.  Shireyll Moore also had 19 points for the Stags, knocking down 7-15 from the floor and 2-5 from behind the arc.

Baendu Lowenthal just missed a double-double, scoring 13 points and hauling in nine rebounds in 23 minutes of action.  She shot 5-9 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line.

Fairfield used an 18-0 run over the first 7:48 of the second half to put the game out of reach.  The run expanded a 34-23 halftime lead to a 52-23 advantage on a layup by Geehan with 12:35 to play.  Shannon Malone put the Purple Knights on the board with a basket with 12:09 to play in the half.

Fairfield had assists on nine of its 13 first-half baskets, and finished the game with 15 assists.  Megan Caskin, who played 27 minutes, led the way in that category with six assists, as compared to no turnovers.  She also had two points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

The first-half for the Stags was highlighted by seven blocked shots and just six turnovers.  The Stags shot 36.1 percent from the floor in that first half, but knocked down 17-33 from the floor in the second half, finishing the game shooting 43.5 percent from the field.

Rookie Taryn Johnson had eight points and seven rebounds, with five on the offensive glass, in 15 minutes off the bench.  Junior college transfer Lauren Tucker had seven points, while freshmen Desiree Pina had five points and Sarah Paulus added three points.  Junior Tara Flaherty hit 2-5 from the field for four points, along with three rebounds.

The Stags open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 at the UNC-Asheville Tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Stags will take on the host Bulldogs at 4:30, while Morgan State and William and Mary will meet in the other contest.
