
Geehan's Last Second Three-Pointer Give Stags 59-58 Overtime Win Over Sacred Heart

Fairfield University junior Stephanie Geehan's first career three-pointer came at just the right time as the forward sank the game-winner to lift the Fairfield University women's basketball team to a 59-58 victory over Sacred Heart University this afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Geehan hit the trifecta with three ticks left on the clock after freshman Sarah Paulus found Geehan open on the weak side. Sacred Heart (0-3) attempted to in bound in the closing seconds but Geehan knocked it away to preserve the win for the Stags (2-2).
Geehan finished with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Fairfield. Freshman Desiree Pina led the Stags with 16 points while senior Baendu Lowenthal tallied 14 points and nine rebounds.
Fairfield trailed by as much as seven in the first half, but the Stags chipped away at the lead, pulling within 22-19 on a free throw by Lowenthal with just over four minutes left in the period. A three-pointer by Sarah Paulus at the 3:26 mark tied the score 22-22 but Callan Taylor answered with a three of her own to put the Pioneers back on top. Lowenthal cut it to 25-24 on a jumper with 16 ticks left on the clock, but Kaitlin Sowinski laid one in with a second remaining to give Sacred Heart at 27-24 lead heading into the break.
Fairfield went on a 6-0 run to start the second half. At 17:46, Shireyll Moore found Geehan in the lane for the easy lay-in to give the Stags a 30-27 advantage. The two teams continued to trade hoops. Tara Flaherty gave Fairfield a 41-40 advantage at 12:14, but Sacred Heart went on a 9-2 run over the next eight minutes to pull ahead, 49-43. A bucket by Geehan and a pair of free throws by Flaherty at 2:41 pull the Stags within 49-47. With 1:25 left in the stanza Megan Caskin found Moore for the lay-in to knot the score 49-49. Despite last second shots, the two teams could not break the stalemate and headed into overtime.
Pina started the scoring for the Stags just 30 seconds into overtime with a pair of free throws. Sowinski tied the score 51-51 with a lay-in at the 2:16 mark. With the scored tied 52-52 with 90 seconds remaining Alisa Apo made two free throws, which Moore answered with a lay-up to even the game. Sacred Heart regained the lead on a basket by Sowinksi with 56 seconds left. Flaherty made a lay-up to tie the score 56-56. Sowinski answered with a lay-up and was fouled on the play, but failed to convert the three-point play setting up Geehan's last second heroics.
Sowinski finished with a game-high 19 points along with 11 boards for the double-double while Stephanie Ryan had 18 points.
Moore posted 10 points for the Stags while Flaherty finished with eight.
The Stags return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26 when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind, for a 2 p.m. contest with IPFW.
