Cornell Rallies For 58-54 Win Over Women's Basketball

Dec 1, 2008

The Fairfield University women's basketball team dropped a 58-54 decision to Cornell University on Monday night in Ithaca, N.Y.  The Stags fall to 3-3 on the year, while the Big Red improve to 4-3.

Stephanie Geehan gave the Stags a 41-36 lead with a basket with 11:10 to play in the game, but Cornell would answer with a 5-0 run of its own.  The Big Red would turn that run into a game-ending 22-13 run for the win.

Baendu Lowenthal would lead the Stags, finishing with 18 points, to go along with four rebounds and three assists.  Geehan just missed out on a double-double, as she scored a season-high 14 points, shooting 7-14 from the field, and corralling nine rebounds.

Geehan scored eight points in the first half, shooting 4-5 from the field, and her basket with 9:07 to play in the half gave the Stags a 19-10 advantage.  Fairfield would not score for nearly the next five minutes, and Cornell would end the half with a 14-6 run, to make the halftime score 25-24 to the Stags.

Tara Flaherty provided the Stags with a spark off of the bench, finishing with eight points, hitting 4-6 from the field.  Megan Caskin had a team-high six assists in the game, as the Stags dished out 14 for the contest.  The Stags also blocked six shots in the game, two each by Shireyll Moore and Geehan.

Cornell was led by Shanna Scarselletta, who scored 20 of her game-high 21 points in the second half.  She was 7-12 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line.  Allie Fedorowicz and Lauren Benson were also in double figures, each adding a dozen points.

Fairfield wraps up its three-game road swing on Friday, Dec. 5, traveling to Saint Peter's, for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) season opener.  That game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m.
