Geehan Has Double-Double In 62-44 Loss To Iona

The Fairfield University women's basketball team dropped a 62-44 decision to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College on Sunday at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  The loss drops the Stags to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC, while the Gaels improve to 7-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference action.

The Stags struck first as Stephanie Geehan put home her first of five field goals in15 seconds into the half, but the Gaels would out score the Stags 33-18 the rest of the half.  Fairfield shot 25.9 percent, 18-58 from the field in the first-half of play, while committing 13 turnovers. 

The Stags would shoot 35.5 percent, 11-31, from the field in the second-half, but could get no closer than 15, which they did for the final time with 1:41 to play, 59-45.  Lauren Tucker scored all of her career-high seven points in the second half, hitting 3-4 from the field.  She also had two boards and an assist in her eight minutes of action.

Geehan led the Stags in scoring, 12 points, and rebounding, 12, as she recorded her first double-double of the season. She shot 5-8 from the field and 2-2 from the line, as well as blocking two shots and recording two steals.  Taryn Johnson and Tara Flaherty both added six points for the Stags.  Johnson blocked three shots to go along with an assist, a rebound and a steal in 12 minutes of play.

The Stags finished the game shooting 31 percent, 18-58, with an assist on 12 of those field goals.  Fairfield was 6-8 at the free throw line in the game, with all if its chances in the first-half.  The Gaels shot 39.7 percent, 14-36, from the field for the game, hitting five three-pointers.  Iona was 7-10 at the stripe in the contest.

Fairfield will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 10 as it travels to Emmitsburg, Md. for a non-conference contest with Mount St. Mary's.
