Stags Rally Falls Short In Blue Sky Final 62-57 To Boston College

The Fairfield University women's basketball team dropped a 62-57 decision to Boston College in the Championship Game of the Blue Sky Classic at Dartmouth College on Tuesday night.  The loss drops the Stags to 6-6 overall, while the Eagles improve to 10-3.

Fairfield had Stephanie Geehan and Baendu Lowenthal named to the All-Tournament Team, as the Stags finished second in the tournament.  Geehan finished with 12 points, six boards and a career-high five steals in the game.  Lowenthal nearly had a double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds.

Fairfield took a 29-26 lead into the intermission, but Boston College knocked down 5-6 from the field to start the half and built a 40-33 lead with 15:53 to play in the game.  Moore started a Fairfield 13-2 run with a basket at 13:55.  The run finished with a Lowenthal lay-up at the 9:24 mark and the Stags ahead 46-42.  The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run of their own over a 90 second span to take a 50-46 lead that would not be relinquished.

Lauren Groom drained a three-pointer with 2:40 to play, to make the sore 56-54.  The Eagles were 4-4 from the stripe in the final 21 seconds of play to put the game away.

Groom scored in double digits for the third straight game, scoring 10 points, hitting 2-3 from behind the arc.  Moore also scored 10 for Fairfield, hitting 4-8 from the field.

The Stags finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field, hitting 25-58.  The Stags were 3-8 from behind the arc and 4-8 at the free throw line.  Boston College finished the game hitting 41.1 percent from the field, 23-56, with 2-16 from behind the ar and a tournament record 14-14 at the free throw line.

Boston College had a 36-33 advantage on the glass, with both teams pulling in 14 offensive rebounds.  The Stags out scored the Eagles 30-22 in the paint for the game and each team received 12 points from its bench.

The Stags will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 4 when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Loyola at 1 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
