
Women's Basketball Falls 80-60 At Kansas
Jan 7, 2009The Fairfield University women's basketball team dropped an 80-60 decision to the University of Kansas on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The loss drops the Stags to 7-7 on the year, while the Jayhawks improve to 11-2.
Fairfield shot 28.1 percent from the field in the first half and fell behind 41-25, but came out hot in the second half. The Stags scored the first six points of the half and cut the deficit to just nine points, 44-35, with 15:00 to play in the game on a Tara Flaherty lay-up. Danielle McCray answered 19 seconds later with a three-pointer, which Desiree Pina got back with a lay-up at the 14:20 mark to make it 47-37. Fairfield would get within 10 points one more time, 51-41, with 12:45 to play on a Baendu Lowenthal basket, but would get no closer.
McCray drained her second three pointer of the half for the Jayhawks with 11:53 to play, jumpstarting a 10-0 run over a 2:02 span, to expand the lead to 20 points, 64-44. Kansas would lead by as many as 26 ponts, for the second time with 3:56 to play, 77-51. Fairfield out scored the host 9-3 over the last 3:46 to get the final score to 80-60.
The Stags shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, 16-32, and finished hitting 39.1 percent of its field goals for the game. Fairfield shot 3-8 from behind the arc and were 7-12 at the free throw line.
Lowenthal finished with a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-16, including 5-7 in the second half. She also had five boards, two assists and two blocked shots. Pina had her second consecutive double figure game, with 10 points, hitting 4-8 from the floor, recording three steals and having two assists. Megan Caskin led the team with seven rebounds and five assists, while committing only one turnover.
Kansas, which shot 50 percent for the game, was led by the 16 points of McCray. The Jayhawks shot 59.4 percent in the first half, and had four players in double-figures. Ivana Catic had seven assists and seven boards, while McCray and Nicollette Smith also had seven boards.
The Stags return to action on Sunday, Jan. 11, when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Saint Peter's at the Arena at Harbor Yard at 1 p.m.
