
Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Peter's 65-60

The Fairfield University women's basketball team earned a 65-60 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win over visiting Saint Peter's College Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard. With the win the Stags improve to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Peahens fall to 4-10 on the year and 1-4 in conference action.
Stephanie Geehan put the Stags ahead 2-0 23 seconds into the contest, and Fairfield would build the advantage to 13-3 5:20 into the game. Fairfield maintained at least an eight-point lead the remainder of the half, twice taking an 11-point edge, the last time 25-14 with 57 seconds left. Saint Peter's scored the last basket of the first-half, with 38 seconds to play to make the score 25-16 Fairfield at the intermission.
Fairfield started the second half in similar fashion, using a 9-2 run in the first 5:23 to build a 16-point edge, 34-18. The Stags maintained at least an eight-point edge over the next 12 minutes, leading 54-42 with 3:20 to play on a Desiree Pina jumper. The Peahens responded with a 15-5 run over the next 2:49, closing to within two points, 59-57 with 17 seconds to play. Fairfield would go 6-6 from the line in the final 17 seconds, with two each from Geehan, Pina and Baendu Lowenthal, to secure the victory.
Lowenthal would finish as the leading scorer in the game, tallying 19 points, going 7-16 from the line. She also added eight rebounds in the victory. Geehan finished with 10 points, eight boards and three blocked shots, while Megan Caskin recorded a team-high nine rebounds. She also had a game-high five assists. Pina scored in double figures for the third straight game, tallying 14, on 4-7 shooting from the floor and a 5-7 effort at the line.
The Stags out rebounded the Peahens 45-42 in the game, with a 15-13 advantage on the glass. Both teams committed 17 turnovers, with the Peahens having nine steals and five blocked shots. Fairfield blocked four shots and had four steals, as a team.
Charlene Riddick finished with a double-double for the Peahens, tallying 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also had three assists, three steals and three blocked shots. Tania Kennedy and Jamie Smith both also scored in double figures for Saint Peter's, each tallying a dozen.
Fairfield finished the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field, 22-59, with a pair of three-pointers and a 19-30 effort at the free throw line. Saint Peter's shot 35.9 percent from the floor, 23-64, hitting 5-17 from behind the arc and 9-14 at the charity stripe.
With the victory the Stags sweep the season series with the Peahens, having earned a 46-38 win in Jersey City, N.J. in the league opener on Dec. 5
The Stags begin a four-game road swing on Tuesday, traveling to New Rochelle, N.Y., for a noon contest against Iona.
