
Women's Basketball Wins Sixth Straight, 60-41, At Loyola

The Fairfield University women's basketball team held host Loyola College to 17 second-half points to pull away for a 60-41 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win on Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena in Baltimore, Md. The Stags win their sixth straight game to improve to 14-8 overall and 9-2 in league play, while the Greyhounds fall to 8-13 on the year and 8-13 in the MAAC.
The Stags held a 26-24 advantage at halftime, but the Greyhounds tied the game on a pair of Kaitlin Grant free throws 12 seconds into the half. Fairfield answered with six straight, four from Desiree Pina, to open a 32-26 advantage that would get no less than four the remainder of the game. They Greyhounds would get within four points for the final time, with 15:48 to play, 36-32.
Megan Caskin started an 11-3 run with the first of her two field goals just under a minute later. That run made the lead 47-33, and Fairfield would lead by double-digits the remainder of the game.
Fairfield allowed Loyola to hit just 4-21 from the field in the second half, and score just 17 points. It marks the fourth time this season that the Stags have held an opponent to 17 points or less in a half.
Baendu Lowenthal would lead all scorers, equaling her season-high with 23 points, shooting 9-16 from the field. Stephanie Geehan had a solid all around game, tallyin a game-high 14 rebounds, blocking seven shots, scoring eight points, dishing out two assist and recording two steals.
Fairfield blocked 10 shots in the game as a team, with two from Tara Flaherty, who also had four points and four rebounds.
The Stags finished with 20 turnovers, 14 of them coming in the first half. It was the first time the Stags committed more than 19 turnovers since Dec. 7 at home versus Iona. Fairfield had 13 assists an seven steals in the game.
Fairfield shot 52 percent, 13-25, from the field in the second half, and finished at 47.9 percent for the game. The Stags hit only a pair of three-pointer, both in the second half, and were 12-17 at the stripe. Fairfield had a 45-21 advantage on the glass, with a 14-8 edge on the offensive boards.
The Stags complete their two game road-swing on Friday, traveling to MAAC for Rider for a 7 p.m. contest.
