
Lowenthal, Geehan, Pina Honored By MAAC Coaches With All-MAAC Accolades

The Fairfield University women's basketball team had a trio of players honored with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) postseason honors, announced on Monday afternoon. Senior Baendu Lowenthal (Riverside, N.J.) was named to the All-MAAC First Team, while junior Stephanie Geehan (Braintree, Mass.) earned Third Team accolades. Freshman Desiree Pina (Plainville, Conn.) was voted to the league's All-Rookie Team.
Lowenthal, a two-time All-MAAC Second Team selection, is leading the Stags in scoring this season, with a 15.7 points per game average, which is third in the league. She is second on the team with 7.6 boards per game and has a team-best seven double-doubles this season. Lowenthal, along with the other four members of the All-MAAC First Team are now candidates for the MAAC Player of the Year award, which will be announced on Thursday.
Geehan earns her first postseason league accolades after a season in which she averaged 8.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. The junior swatted 84 shots, tops in the MAAC, and the second-most in a single-season in program history. Geehan had five double-doubles this year, with a career-high 18 rebounds in a home win over Loyola.
Pina started all but one game this season, averaging 29 minutes per game and appearing in every contest. She averaged 8.6 points a game during the regular season, scoring 10 or more points in 12 of the games she played. Pina is leading the team entering the MAAC Tournament with 42 steals, highlighted by a career-high five in the win over Rider on the road. She, along with the other seven members of the All-Rookie Team, are candidates for the league's Rookie of the Year award, which will be announced on Thursday.
Fairfield finished the regular season with a 17-12 record and in third place in the MAAC, at 12-6. The third-seed in the 2009 Citizens Bank MAAC Championship, the Stags will take on the sixth-seeded Saints of Siena College in the quarterfinals. The game is set for Friday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. and will be played at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.
