Frager Announces Class Of 2013

Jun 3, 2009

Fairfield University head women's basketball coach Joe Frager announced the signings of Katelyn Linney (Freehold, N.J.), Brittany MacFarlene (Hamilton, Ontario) and Laura Vetra (Riga, Latvia) to National Letters of Intent.  Frager also announced the addition of Connecticut native Kara Fillion (Clinton, Conn.) to the roster beginning in the fall.

""I am looking forward to coaching all of our incoming student-athletes," said Frager.  "We look for them to excel on the court, in the classroom, and in the community."

Linney, a 5-foot-8 guard, completed her career at St. John Vianney High School with 1,455 points.  She averaged 16.1 points per game as a senior, earning First Team All-State accolades.  Linney led the team to its second consecutive Parochial ‘A' State Championship and captured the 2009 New Jersey State Tournament of Champions title, earning MVP accolades.

"Katelyn had an extremely successful career at St. John Vianney," said Frager.  "She will provide us with a scoring punch and quickness in the backcourt, and she has the potential to contribute right away."

MacFarlane is a 6-foot-1 post player that is currently a senior at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary.  A team captain each of the last two seasons, she led the Knights to back-to-back city and GHAC Championships, as well as an OFSAA silver medal in 2008.  In 2008 she was named the team captain of the Team Ontario U17 squad.

"Brittany will provide us with depth at the post position," said Frager.  "She has a soft shooting touch and can play inside and out."

Vetra, a 6-foot-1 post player, comes to Fairfield after playing at Fort Worth Christian School in Texas.  As a senior she averaged 11.8 points per game and 7.6 rebounds an outing, while serving as a team captain for the Lady Cardinals.  In her native country Vetra averaged 14.4 points and 7.8 rebounds a game for her club team, Kolibri.  Her father, Gundars, played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, of the National Basketball Association, during the 1992-93 campaign.

"Laura handles the ball well for a post player," said Frager, "and has shown she is comfortable with her back to the basket or facing up.  She will compete for minutes in the frontcourt."

Fillion is a 5-foot-9 guard that will graduate from The Morgan School this spring.  A team captain her last two seasons, she earned four varsity letters, leading the Huskies to 79 wins and the 2006 SLC Championship.  As senior she averaged 21.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 87 percent from the free throw line, in earning her second consecutive All-State nod.

"Kara had a fine scholastic career at Morgan," said Frager, "and we feel that she can make positive contributions to our program."

Fairfield is a member of the 10-team NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).  The Stags finished the 2008-09 season with an 18-13 overall record and a 12-6 mark in league play, including a 73-65 overtime win over #20 Marist on January 23rd.  Frager begins his third-year at the helm of the Stags, having won 40 games the past two seasons with the Stags, and running his 11-year collegiate mark to 229-105.
