FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Five Fairfield University shells crossed the finish line first in a tri-meet with Sacred Heart University and the United States Military Academy. The varsity 8, the second varsity 8, the varsity four, the lightweight 4 and the novice 4 all took home first-place finishes for the Stags.
Fairfield coasted to a 30-second victory in the the varsity 8 race, finishing the event in 6:@6.28. Sacred Heart garnered second place with a time of 6:56.78. The varsity 8 included coxswain Sandy Wrinn, Jen White, Katie Gill, Maureen Sullivan, Christine Opiela, Mary Claire Finnen, Beth Hemmingway, Amy Ferguson and Andrea Bazos.
The second varsity won by nearly 14 seconds over Army (7:00.91) and more than 45 seconds over Sacred Heart (7:31.15). The Stags shell consisted of coxswain Katie Molteni, Mary Claire Finnen, Andrea Bazos, Kate Chesny, Mariel Kaufmann, Erica Mullaney, Kylin Wentz, Maura O'Connor and Erin Daly.
The Stags' varsity 4 edged out Army in the next race, taking first with a time of 7:13.37. The Cadets' second-place time was 7:21.14, followed by Sacred Heart (8:04.69). The Red and White secured the win behind the efforts of coxswain Sandy Wrinn, Maureen Sullivan, Katie Gill, Christine Opiela and Beth Hemmingway.
The lightweight 4 and the novice 4 enjoyed an equal amount of success, each placing first in their respective events. The lightweight crew posted a time of 7:39.37, ten seconds better than Sacred Heart, as coxswain Katie Molteni paced Amy Ferguson, Erica Mullaney, Maura O'Connor and Erin Daly to victory. The novice 4 was comprised of coxswain Jess Raymond, Katie Donahue, Emily Green, Brittany Teahan and Claire Meehan. The team crossed the finish line with a time of 7:30.71, with Army (7:37.09) and Sacred Heart (7:48.91) taking second and third, respectively.
The novice 8 secured a second place finish with a time of 7:15.53, as Army took first place in 6:56.18. The novice 8 included coxswain Thais Pagan, Katie Donahue, Emily Green, Brittany Teahan, Claire Meehan, Christine Anglace, Lindsay Dewan, Justine Rapoport and Kylin Wentz.
The second novice 8 - coxswain Danielle McLean, Chrissy Young, Amanda Piel, Gabby Dogali, Brittany Child, Christine Anglace, Lindsay Dewan, Lisa Augustine and Jen Jemison - also grabbed a second-place finish in 7:49.92. Army won the event with a time of 7:21.30.
