PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Fairfield University women's crew team headed south for a match up against Drexel University on April 17. The Stags kept close in all three of their races, but came up short against the home team. The event took place on the Schuylkill River with a 10 mph headwind.

The varsity 8 narrowly missed out on a victory, as the shell experienced problems in the the middle of the race. Still, the team almost recovered to win the race, but was edged out by three seconds. The team, which finished the run with a time of 6:56.3, included coxswain Sandy Wrinn, Jen White, Katie Gill, Maureen Sullivan, Christine Opiela, Mary Claire Finnen, Beth Hemingway, Amy Ferguson and Andrea Bazos.

The second varsity 8 held their own until the end, as Drexel managed a 10-second victory in the competition. Fairfield completed the course with a time of 7:22.8, while Drexel won the event in 7:12.6. The second varsity 8 was comprised of coxswain Katie Molteni, Maureen Sullivan, Beth Hemingway, Kate Chesny, Katy Healy, Erica Mullaney, Mariel Kauffman, Maura O'Connor and Erin Daly.

The day also included a novice 8 race, in which Fairfield placed two entries. Drexel ended up winning the race with a time of 7:22.1, while the Fairfield A secured second in 7:35.5. A time was not available for the Fairfield B boat. The A team included coxswain Thais Pagan, Jessica Raymond, Emily Green, Katie Donahue, Claire Meehan, Brittany Teehan, Christie Anglace, Justine Rapaport and Kylin Wentz. The B shell included coxswain Danielle McLean, Chrissy Young, Amanda Piel, Brittany Child, Lindsay Dewan, Gabby Dogali, Mari Heenan, Lisa Augustine and Jen Jemison.
