SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University crew competed in seven events at the Head of the Fish, highlighted by the varsity 4's sixth-place finish.
Behind the rowing of Caitlin Bakum, Kathleen Bradler, Christine Opiela, Katie Gill, Erin Schuling, Andrea Bazos, Heidi Bentsen, Sarah Bachman and coxswain Samantha Lombardi, the varsity 8 finished its race in 14:16 for a 13th-place finish. London Training won the vent with a time of 12:43.
The lightweight 8 garnered a fifth-place medal following a run of 15:41. The team included coxswain Katie Molteni, stroke Amy Ferguson, Carolyn Stankiewicz, Maura O'Connor, Carolyn Arnold, Alyssa Aurisy, Sandi Wrinn, Katy Jonaitis and bow Marjorie Powers. The Ottawa Rowing Club won the race, as Fairfield was the event's top collegiate finisher.
The novice 8 completed its sprint with a time of 17:39, with SUNY-Buffalo winning the race in 14:16. The novice 8 team consisted of coxswain Carolyn Brayfield, stroke Angela Lively, Bethany Hemingway, Maureen Sullivan, Ellen Dunleavy, Danielle Padilla, Katelyn Friedson, Heidi Ochab and bow Jill Ryan.
The varsity 4 A boat grabbed sixth place (15:52), while the B boat secured 30th place in their respective event (17:48). The A boat was comprised of coxswain Katie Molteni, stroke Erin Schuling, Kathleen Bardler, Mary Finnen and bow Sarah Bachman. The B boat included coxwain Samantha Lombardi, stroke Kate Chesny, Diana Polzer, Katy Healy and bow Lisa Viele. The Ottawa Rowing Club won the event with a time of 15:07.
In lightweight 4 action, the Stags 14th place by crossing the line in 18:16. Coxswain Sandi Wrinn led rowers Maura O'Connor, Carolyn Arnold, Marjorie Powers and Carolyn Stankiewicz to the finish. The women's double tandem of Christine Opiela and Amy Ferguson placed 15th in 18:42, behind a first-place finish by the London Training team (14:29).
Finally, the novice 4 race included two Fairfield entries: A boat (18:07) - Carolyn Brayfield, Angela Lively, Bethany Hemingway, Jen White and Robyn Raber; B boat (18:50) - Sandi Wrinn, Heidi Ochab, Ellen Dunleavy, Katy Healy and Jill Ryan.
"I was encouraged by the strong showing by our team, competing not only against strong collegiate programs but also solid rowing clubs," said Head Coach Andre Albert.
