FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The sunny skies of Florida will serve as the backdrop for the Fairfield University crew team next week as it prepares for another challenging schedule this spring. The team will conduct drills and compete against other schools down south, giving Head Coach Andre Albert a good look at his team in favorable conditions.
"We are planning a on a lot of rowing next week," Albert said. "The more water time the better. The first two or three days we will be on the water a few times each day."
The time on the water will certainly come in handy for Albert and his team, especially with the team being so young. The Fall season helped the novices enjoy a solid start to their collegiate career, under the watchful eye of Albert and assistant coach A.J. Miller.
"I give A.J. all the credit for prepping the team for the spring run," Albert said. "She has come up with new drills and exercises that really are shaping the team up. Mike Ridgeman has also been helping us as a volunteer, and has been instrumental in handling our workouts as well."
The underclassmen have several upperclassmen to look to for help during the rigors of the spring season. Albert points out Nancy Sidnam and Emily Green as two student-athletes who have assisted in bringing the newcomers along. "I think than Nancy and Emily are our strong leaders right now," Albert said. "They have a good relationship with our frosh and are working hard. Cecelia Oliverio and Kelly Reynolds have also been an important part of the process as well."
The team looks primed for a strong run this season, with the hope of peaking at the MAAC championships and carrying that success into Dad Vails.
"I think that the varsity 4+ and novice 8 have the talent to win at MAACs and go on and do well at Dad Vails," Albert said. "Once they 4 gets on the water, I think they will realize their potential which should make them a favorite at the MAACs and potentially make the finals at Dad Vails. I am really impressed by the work ethic and dedication of our freshmen. I think they will really show us a lot this spring."
